From last Christmas to now, the year has been filled with hard work, great adventures, new beginnings, and celebrations of life. We are blessed and extremely grateful for wonderful clients, close friends, and loving families.

Jeffery McCullough Art & Design Consulting started the year off in a very swell way by completing an incredible project in Lafayette that was the cover story of the February issue of Louisiana Homes & Gardens Magazine.

RENAISSANCE MARKET in the Oil Center in Lafayette is my top choice for books for my library. Mary Landry has excellent taste and is always SO up with what's hot in the world of art, design, and fashion books. Here are three of the hottest books of 2011 that are available at Renaissance Market:

For Traditional Design, New York firm Cullman & Kravis is at the top of the list. See how they do it in Decorating Master Class: The Cullman & Kravis Way, $ 50.

I always turn to New York designer Thomas O'Brien for inspiration. I constantly use O'Brien's collections for Hickory Chair & Circa Lighting in my client projects. His self proclaimed design style "American Modern" is the perfect combination of American classic antiques with a modern twist. The book is $ 50.

Any fashionista must have this book. I have one YSL item, pants that are perfection that I got years ago at Fred Segal in Los Angeles that will remain in my wardrobe forever. Yves Saint Laurent's designs are simply that good and this book illustrates why. $ 55.

Back from South Georgia, I headed straight to England. Well, not really, but close. London Trading Company (started in England but relocated to Atlanta in 2003) in the Buckhead area of Atlanta is on East Andrews Drive, one of my favorite shopping streets. In addition to the fine artists that she represents, Lue Svendson is hosting New York jewelry designer Wayne Anderson during Friday and Saturday's open house. VITA New York is the line that Wayne co-designs with Shauna Hull. New York Magazine and Harper's Bazaar have featured the beautiful designs. And they will be in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, on Friday and Saturday? YES! And boy is there a story there. The ever-industrious and lover of luxe, Hope Hebert, was in New York in October, found Wayne, bought jewelry from him, came back to Louisiana spreading the word of VITA's beautiful designs, and now he's coming to Breaux Bridge thanks to the equally industrious Lue Svendson!

I wish I could be in Breaux Bridge this weekend to organize a luncheon at Cafe des Amis and a shopping excursion at a few of my favorite shops. Would be fun, no??!!

Since I can't be there, you will just have to go and do what I would do if spending a day in this charming town. After your morning of fast and furious art buying at Rue du Pont Galerie, refuel with lunch at Cafe des Amis which is across the street from the gallery. Walk lunch off by heading just down the street to Lucullus Antiques, a shop that Breaux Bridge is lucky to have. An outpost of their New Orleans home base, the Breaux Bridge location of Patrick Dunne's beautiful shop has a few items perfect for holiday gift giving:

Make an appointment with Ginger Kelly to visit her studio. Ginger Kelly is a glass artist, glass blower and international giftware designer. She moved her studio to Louisiana in 2005 and now lives in the lovely town of Breaux Bridge. I absolutely love these glasses and pitcher. SO fun and a great addition to any kitchen. They would look fantastic in glass front cabinets.

As you leave Breaux Bridge, step back in time a few centuries with a stop at my go-to dealer for fine antiques for client projects. Robert Smith of Au Vieux Paris Antiques specializes in exactly the type of French antiques I prefer: clean lined and perfect. A visit to this gem of a shop is an exceptional history lesson in all things French. There are many wonderful gift items available at Au Vieux Paris Antiques but my favorites are single candlesticks. I have a little bit of a candle obsession right now and I assure you Au Vieux Paris has the BEST available! And through Saturday, everything in the shop is 20% off!! Best to make an appointment to be certain the shop is open.

The gallery and studio of this sculptor/painter is an elegant three-story townhouse that is a story in white allowing the paintings and sculpture of Steve Martin to seemingly float off the walls and around the room. I am often drawn to artists studies which allow one to get into the brain of the artist as the process of creating a brilliant piece is begun. Steve Martin's studies for his larger pieces are perfect in a tabletop vignette as I have used them for client projects and in my study in Atlanta.

Bayou Contessa (SUCH a perfect title for her blog!) Julie Neill is sooo New Orleans you can hardly believe it. The first time Tim (a Louisiana native) met Julie he walked away and said, "now that's New Orleans!". The incredibly talented (and successful) lighting designer creates (all are hand made--I've seen the artisans painting and gilding them) brilliant and dazzling chandeliers, sconces, and lanterns that grace fine homes all over America like these below.

As Julie Neill Designs grew over the last ten years, Julie recognized the opportunity to not only have a lighting showroom but a beautiful shopping experience that just so happens to be canopied with all of her fabulous designs. Julie Ponze does an incredible job making sure that Julie Neill remains unique (like both of the Julie's!) by representing artists and manufacturers that you will not see anywhere else in New Orleans. Weekend Getaway-Part 2-Antique Mall Shopping in Madison, GA; Christmas at Coteau in Louisiana

Madison, Georgia, is truly one of the most charming and picturesque small towns I have ever seen. Dating to 1809, named for U.S. President James Madison and, according to rumor, saved by Sherman because of its beauty, Madison is filled with incredible architecture and shops that beckon folks from all over the country. Only an hour from Atlanta, this is the perfect day trip destination or, for a relaxed weekend getaway, stay at the Ritz Carlton at Reynolds Plantation (an easy 30 minute drive away). Houses like the two shown in above photos fill the town as do wonderful antique shops. We hit quite a few of the shops but there were three stand-outs that I will visit again...soon!

My only regret is that I didn't have friend Eddie Ross with me! Eddie would have gone absolutely mad in these three....I can see the U-haul truck filled with goodies heading back to Connecticut now!

First stop.....the 20,000 square foot MADISON MARKETS with 75 great dealers. Furniture, art, new, old, accessories, books..you name it, it is at Madison Markets!

From a little research I learned that Whelan was born in Los Angels in 1889, studied art at Stanford University and the Art Students League in New York and Los Angeles School or Art & Design, and died in Los Angeles in 1974.

Weekend Getaway-Part 1--Antique Mall Shopping for Christmas Presents/Clients

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! We spent a couple of days with my family at the Ritz Carlton at Reynolds Plantation on Lake Oconee in central Georgia. My parents have been several times but we had not. It is a gorgeous place. The hotel is as great as most Ritz Carlton's, the lake is beautiful and serene, and the location is perfect for an easy, relaxed getaway.

There is something for everyone here. Golf, tennis, kayaking, fishing, three great restaurants on the property, and a spa that is apparently one of the best in Georgia.

But this trip for us was about Thanksgiving and time with family. As dear friend Lue Svendson said about Thanksgiving, "it is the most honest holiday. No presents, no long preparations, no pretense. Just giving thanks and being together." I agree whole heartedly and that is exactly the kind of holiday we had. Dinner at the Georgia Grille in the hotel with dessert after at the house my parents rented for them (we stayed at the hotel!). It was a relaxed, easy, happy affair all around. One big excitement was the engagement of my nephew, Daniel, to the sweet Julie Holcomb! Daniel proposed (with a gorgeous ring I should add) on the Ritz Carlton grounds just before dinner. It was very sweet and as they are a wonderful couple, quite a special moment.

On Friday, we explored the beautiful towns of Greensboro and Madison for a little holiday shopping. WOW! Both towns are about as charming as any I've ever seen and GREAT finds for Christmas gifts and client projects were everywhere. I couldn't believe how incredibly reasonable everything was. I scored some deals, was able to pick up a few gifts, and have lots of great items to present to clients. I found so much that I am breaking it up and doing two blog posts.

A true artist is born an artist. Even when life decisions and paths lead in a different direction for a while, the artist inside will always be there, often just on the cusp, waiting to escape and lead the artist back to that place of fulfillment that an artist can only get from creating. Many painters have the ability to copy and put on canvas the literal interpretation of something (or another artist's work--a major flaw and detriment to the ultimate success of said copier) they have seen. A true artist is fed from deep inside and soulfully feels what they are painting. The interpretation is uniquely their own. Such is exactly the case with Joy Gardner who currently is the featured artist at Rue du Pont Galerie in Louisiana.

"I began painting as a young child, taking classes throughout my youth, including as part of my high school and college curriculum."

A life of marriage, two children, and full-time employment as a paralegal for nearly 25 years left little time for painting. But the artist inside never ceased to speak. "I began painting seriously when I rented a studio space at St. Joan of Arc about four years ago. I had sold a few paintings through the years before that, but that was when I really began to work on painting a more serious body of work and to really develop my own style." A well-lived life filled with travel, time on the water, and exposure to the work of some of her favorite artists (Wolf Kahn, Ira Barkoff, Joan Mitchell, Bonnard, Monet, Matisse, and Mary Cassatt) serve as influences and inspiration for the pieces born in the large studio space which I have visited.

The artist path that Joy took from early studies to present has seen several chapters. When I asked Joy about the training she has had, she answered:

"After college, I began taking watercolor classes with a well-known and very talented Mobile artist, the late Bea Tucker. I took classes and studied under Bea and she became a dear friend and a mentor for me. She encouraged me to continue painting and I learned a great deal from her. At some point I began painting in oils and Bea helped me learn about that medium."

And then you have the span of time (marriage, children, career) from post college to 2009:

"During the summer of 2009, I got to know another talented local artist and teacher, Wanda Sullivan. I participated in a small group workshop which Wanda taught in my studio. I consider that workshop a turning point in my artistic career. It was at that point that I began to compile a cohesive body of paintings. I consider Wanda a good friend and I continue to admire her work.

In the fall of 2009 I participated in a workshop taught by New Orleans artist, Karen Stastny. That opportunity helped to influence my creativity and loosened my style as well as teaching me more about the possibilities of mixed media work."

In just two years since her first gallery show at Robertson Gallery in Mobile, Gardner's work has appealed to many collectors and, more importantly, gallery owners and an art agent (yes, I serve as Joy Gardner's agent and am responsible for the show at Lue Svendson's Rue du Pont Galerie as well as 2010 showings at Tracery in Rosemary Beach, FL, and Gerilyn Lytal Roth Interiors in Lafayette, LA). Laurence Young, artist spotlight

"Nature is always the artist's best source of inspiration, but in its spiritual, not physical sense. In nature every object exists in relationship to other things. This is what we must seek."

So said Hans Hofmann. This quote appeared in Cynthia Huntington's book The Salt House about the relationship between humans and nature while living in the unelectrified, pumped water only Dune Shacks of the Outer Cape's Province Lands in Provincetown. When I read the quote, I knew that one of my favorite Provincetown artists, Laurence Young, was being described.

Laurence Young is an artist whose work is perfect because each piece achieves exactly what Hans Hofmann is referring to--the delicate balance of representing the object as well as that which surrounds it. Whether the subject is a dune, boat, building, or figure, a balance of color, strength, and depth in Laurence Young's paintings keeps the spiritual and physical relationship in check. Boat, dune, and cottage painters are a dime a dozen on Cape Cod but Laurence Young is set apart from all of the rest by his ability to paint more than just a dune, more than just a boat. The viewer can't help but want to get in the painting-to touch the boat, walk the dune, knock on the door of the house-and live in the scene.

Somewhere just between representational and abstract is, according to Young, "a hard place to be. I try to give enough information for the viewer to know it is a particular place or object. But also allow the viewer to investigate the painting and find something interesting and come back to it again and again and find something different." Isn't this exactly like nature? We can visit the same spot over and over but whether we are there in the morning and then again in the afternoon, even on the same day, there will be something new, fresh, exciting. The tide and light will change, therefore the physical and spiritual relationship between the subject and the environment changes.

New, fresh, exciting. This is exactly what drew me to the paintings of Laurence Young when I first saw them at Alden Gallery in Provincetown last Summer. I was with Tim and our dear friend Lue Svendson, the artist and gallerist, at a Friday night Art Walk opening which happened to feature Laurence's paintings. Lue and I fell in love immediately with the work being shown. And then we met the man who created these new, fresh, exciting pieces. What a wonderful soul Laurence Young is. This meeting began a great relationship between Laurence and Lue as Lue's Rue du Pont Galerie in Breaux Bridge, LA, became the second (Elder Gallery in Charlotte was the first) Southern gallery to represent the artist and through both Alden and Rue Du I was able to begin selecting work for client projects. In the last year I have placed four pieces in client projects including this piece purchased at Rue du Pont and now hanging in a Lafayette client's living room:

A life long artist who studied printmaking in college and had a career in the fashion industry in New York, this man's journey from part-time to full-time painter is much like his painting Seasonal Change, ever changing and ever growing. From Boston, to New York, to New Hampshire, and finally Provincetown, the oldest continuous art colony in America, Laurence has experimented with technique and style-he began with oil pastel drawings of scenes of people on the streets of the Upper West Side in New York-studied with various masters including Wolf Kahn, Cynthia Packard (Laurence credits a workshop with Cynthia as changing the course of his work), and Lois Griffel (of Cape Cod School of Art), and whenever he could immersed himself in the work of Milton Avery, Josef Albers, and Egon Schiele.

Wolf Kahn and Cynthia Packard are two of my favorite living artists and I am always blown away by any Milton Avery or Josef Albers that I see so once hearing from Laurence that these are the artists he is inspired by and admires, it became perfectly clear why I respond to his paintings. He admires "Albers as a colorist, Avery for his simplicity of form and color in both landscapes and figures, and is moved to tears by Schiele's figurative work", and is able to be inspired by these greats and incorporate elements observed in their work into his paintings while remaining true to himself as an artist.

Last month, I was able to visit Laurence Young's home studio, attend an opening at Alden Gallery which included new work by Young, and spend an hour on the beach with Laurence getting to know him and learning about who he is as an artist and what makes his paintings so special. As a designer and consultant, I think it is important to know an artist. As a collector, I think it is really important to like an artist. This artist is very easy to like. Warm, introspective, and real are qualities that immediately come to mind. There is something about this native Bostonian and life-long resident of the Northeast that feels Southern. Southern with a slight edginess that adds depth and texture to the character.

An edginess and character like New Orleans, the city that Laurence Young longs to call his winter home to escape the bitterness of February on Cape Cod. "New Orleans reminds me of Provincetown in the early 70s. The Marigny neighborhood has an interesting underbelly, is very real, and is gritty and edgy and full of life. There is a community of artists and access to the arts like Provincetown used to have." With the success achieved at Elder Gallery in Charlotte and Rue du Pont Gallerie in Breaux Bridge, only two hours from New Orleans, and potential gallery representation in other parts of the South, it seems Laurence might have a reason to spend part of the year down South. The artist would certainly be a wonderful addition to the burgeoning art scene of New Orleans.

So what is next for this exceptional artist? Laurence will be included in a show at The Painting Center in New York that opens in late November. This show is curated by Patrick Webb who sees Laurence Young's figurative work as emotionally evocative and the landscapes as expansive, outward, illuminating with a calming and meditative feeling about them.

In addition, the artist would love to be in shows in Quebec and Santa Fe and hopes to spend part of the winter in New Orleans when he comes to Louisiana for an opening at Rue du Pont Galerie.

The Guest House Art

My love affair with a house continues. We leave Provincetown on Sunday so I only have three more days to "visit" this perfect beach abode. I was able to see the property from the beach and the dream still lives, possibly even stronger now that I had the opportunity to stand at the bottom of the steps in bare feet with the sand between my toes imagining walking through the garden into the house of my dreams.

Here is the property from the beach. The main house is on the right and the guest cottage on the left with a lovely garden between.

I imagine the guest cottage as the perfect separate space for friends and family that visit but also a quiet spot to read and meditate. With three large walls to fill with art, I have selected these pieces to continue the collection in the main house. These are pieces by two of my favorite Louisiana artists and seven excellent Cape Cod artists.

OK. I think I can now accept that Tim and I are not going to own this unique property in Provincetown. By the way, the asking price is 1.695 million. That helps let the delusion go!

As I have gone to all of the excellent galleries on the Cape and seen really fantastic pieces of art, I have assembled the dream collection that I would love to have. The pieces I chose are all available for any of you to add to your collection and I hope you will consider some of these pieces.

As I go into my final weekend in Provincetown, I will dream of future visits, get some sand between my toes, sun on my face, and look for boats on the horizon. I hope you are able to do the same wherever you are.
